Kia ora,
Our ferry crossing to Picton from wellington wasnt until 6.15pm so we had another day in wellington. We decided to head to the zoo as it was only $7.50 with our Yha cards which is about 3 quid. Saw all the usual animals the chimps were probably my favourite as they were most active. We made our way to the ferry terminal about 4.30ish and got our transfer from the train station to the ship. We found ourselves a couple of comfy chairs and settled down for the 3 hour trip over the Cook Strait. The trip was pretty smooth it was just a shame that we couldnt see anything. Arrived in Picton about 9ish and checked into our hostel.
the next morning we made the journey to Nelson after having a quick look round Picton which was quite a pretty little town nestled in among the mountains. Got to Nelson about midday found our hostel and then went into town. We decided to pay a tent it was about 30 quid and are planning on doing some camping over the next couple of weeks.
The follwing day we were up at the crack of dawn to go Kayaking in the Able Tasman national park. the weather was fantastic perfect for kayaking. We got driven down to the beach with our kayaks and luanched into the sea. Kate and myself were both in one together. We paddelled around the coast past some lovely little beaches and coves. There was lots of different birdlife to watch. We stopped for lunch which was provided and tucked into sandwhiches and muffins. We walked up to the top of the headland where we had fantastic views over the whole national park. We then paddled a bit further around the corner to meet our water taxi to get back. Arrived back in Nelson about 6ish and just cooked some food and had an early night ready for an early coach to greymouth the next day.
greymouth is supposed to be the biggest township on the west coast but its population is proabably about the same as Nailsea. Heading to the Franz Joseph Glacier next for a hike.
