Monday 4th December
We left Byron Bay around 11am and set off for Coffs Harbour. On the way we stopped at the serives in Ballina where there is the "Big Prawn" - was pretty impressive! All over Australia there are various "giant" things to see, mostly animals but Coffs is famous for having the "Big Banana" so we had to make sure we'd visit it while we were there! The journey took about 4hrs and we were picked up by the woman from the hostel. We stayed at Hoey Moey - it was more of a motel than a hostel but we did have our own tea making facilities (mum I know you'd be impressed!) and our own fridge in the room so we couldn't complain! As we were checking in, Em got chatting to a lad called Adam, he would turn out to be our little Frank clone! They are so similar it's scary and seeing as we'd been missing Frank quite a lot it was a welcome meeting! That evening we made dinner at the hostel and got ready to go and meet a friend of Em's from uni, a girl called Emma. We popped over to the bar opposite our motel room as we had some drink vouchers and we met Adams mate Matt and sat chatting for a bit. At about 9.30 we eventually left to go and meet Emma and her boyfriend Gareth (who is actually from Hockley). We walked down some quite eerily deserted streets to their hostel and ended up staying there all evening chatting and drinking. The Emmas had a lot to catch up on, and when I eventually clicked I remembered I knew her boyfriend Gareth from years ago. Random! Later on we stumbled home. When we got back I went straight into the bathroom for a wee, I sat down and was going about my business when I looked up into the shower directly in front of me and there on the wall was the biggest spider you can ever imagine! I was too scared to scream (think I was in shock!) so I finished what I was doing and quickly and calmly exited the bathroom. I informed Emma of the problem and then we both freaked out - Em tried to take a pic but didn't wana get any closer to it than she had too. It really was huge and pretty much everything over here is deadly so we didn't wana risk touching it! I ran outside and went and got Matt and Adam. Adam screamed like a girl and Em and I hopped up on the top bunks in case it came running out the bathroom! Matt was a true hero! He caught it in a cup after a bit of a struggle, I think it even jumped at him when he touched it! We think it was a Huntsman but to be honest I don't care what I was, I was just so happy to see the back of it!! Yuk! After this ordeal we spent quite a while checking in our bedding for spiders!Wednesday 6th DecemberAfter checking out of the hostel we went on an adventure to the Big Banana with Adam, Matt, Matt and Michelle. Went on a toboggan run up there which was pretty fun. It was basically a big banana with a few attractions around it. I wish I knew the history behind all these big things dotted around Australia! Matt and Adam bought banana water pistols and chased us with them the whole way back along Diggers beach! We got the greyhound to Port Macquarie that afternoon with Matt and Adam.
