We started early this morning to watch the students walk over to the city sports center to perform their Annual Sports Meeting. This Meeting kicks off like the Olympics and then runs like a track meet for a day and a half. Over 2000 students participated in various ways over the two days. The opening ceremony was very impressive. Most of the students wore their everyday clothing to compete (one of the races I saw was the 100 yard dash) although I did see one young man outfitted with track spikes and running shorts.
Julia, Mr. Zhao, and I then headed out on a long drive to visit an ancient dwellings of Hancheng. The village has been designated a historic site and is mostly intact. The surrounding countryside was beautiful.
We capped off another wonderful day with a farewell dinner. Ms. Xiao, Mr. Liu, Mr Zhao, Mr. Gao, Julia, and Ms. Xiao's very good friend from her college days honored me with a dinner. We had a lovely time. I will miss their hospitality and friendship and hope to see all of them again.
I have traveled many places and have never experienced hospitality, generosity, and warmth like I did in Xi'an.
