Glamorama: London
Check out the Paris photo album, it's finally been updated! A slower server combined with a bad connection equals severe delays in updating my photos. Sorry. They're almost all there now...I'm just waiting for Patty to send me her Eiffel Tower pics. However, the pictures really do not do the tower at night justice. You just have to be there.
So, classes started the 17th for me. I've just finished my second week, and I'm really enjoying it! I have a class called European Cultural History, which is visiting a different museum each week. First, we went to the Victoria and Albert museum, mainly to see the fashion collection. I need to go back here several times to see it all, which is okay because it's down the street from me. They have art from all over the world, and it's beautifully organized. There is also an amazing blue and green hanging glass sculpture in the main entrance, and computers on which you can research different time periods and works of art and then print out the info for free!
My next class is Embroidery, which involves drawing out pretty designs and then sewing them onto clothing with colorful thread. It's quite easy, but very time consuming. The final culminates in embroidering a design onto a denim skirt or pair of jeans, using thread, sequins, fur, lace, anything!
Then, I have Drawing and Illustration, which is a bit of a dissapointment so far. Our teacher says she wants us to be creative and do whatever we want, but in reality she tells us what to do and she believes that all Drexel girls draw the same way, which is not true. But I have an open mind and believe I can learn at least one new thing from her.
On Wednesday, I have handknitting. I never bothered to learn this because for some reason I thought it was just making ugly scarfs, but in reality knitting is another way of making clothing. Our awesome teacher, Imken, wants us to be very experimental. We can knit with anything...leather, plastic, metal, anything, and she wants us to make crazy swatches and then eventually we'll make a garment or accessory. I think I want to make a handbag for the final...either bright and sunny and feminine or leather and metal and punk inspired.
Then, we have Design Process. My teacher, Vanda, is crazy...she loves tearing apart magazines and gets inspiration from everything. We are learning how to find inspiration, and then draw out collections and present them. I'm so excited for this class because it's what I want to do in the future. The final is creating a collection of 12 pieces...not sewing, just designing and drawing.
We have a class called European Independent Project. It's a series of lectures and visits to different places in London to learn about London culture. We have to make an A-Z guide to London for the final, listing a different place for each letter. It is supposed to be very personal and creative.
Finally, I have a Friday stylilng class. It's about learning how to put outfits together and having photo shoots and styling for the media. Our teacher, Beverly, has worked with everyone and used to have her own fashion tv show. She sends us out during class to scout good locations for fashion shoots or to find new trends on the street and in the stores. We're having a photo shoot soon in which we put together the outfits, do makeup and hair, and then take photos of one another!
So, I'm going to Amsterdam next weekend with Julie, Patty, Karen, and Allison!! I'm very excited, but I have a lot of work to do before then! Take care everyone!
