Glamorama: London
Well, I have arrived in London. After a long (6 hour) and cramped flight, we finally arrived at Heathrow at 10am. We were met by Simon, who took us on a double decker coach bus into London. We then arrived at our residence in South Kensington. Today, the second day, we had orientation at the London College of Fashion from 10am-2:30pm. I received my schedule, and immediately wanted to cry with joy. No class, Monday or Friday, except for three weeks when we have a Friday styling class. Thursday I have one class at 5:30, so there is ample time for sightseeing, shopping, and weekend travel!!! Don't get me wrong, though. Tuesday and Wendesday are all day, from 9:30-7:30, and classes are three, three and a half hours long. But it is a small price to pay.
Basia, our study abroad leader at the college, also told us that we have a two week break in February!! We were all so excited to learn this...these dates are Monday, 13 February-Friday, 24 February, so if anyone can come visit please do!!!
We leave for Paris Wednesday, 11 January and are all so excited! Apparently its a rigorious trip of three museums a day and tons of walking! We get a pass to get into museums for free and to ride the Metro. Basia also worked it out that we're staying in a nice hotel on the Champs-Elysee, but she got some sort of deal. We get a credit for the trip by doing a sketchbook with five pages a day of drawing and observation of things which inspire us.
After orientation, we walked around our neighboorhood and went to buy pillows and groceries. We live so close to Hyde Park, and Kensington High Street shopping. Unfortunately, it is very expensive here, I'm already worried that I don't have enough money for three months. Allison and I went out to dinner at Bella Italia (English food is disgusting, everyone eats other cuisine here) and afterward decided we couldn't do that too often, or really, at all. It was still nice to have a glass of Italian wine and a nice, hearty meal.
I live in a flat with all the girls (9 of us total) and our resident assistant lives with us too so we can't be loud or messy. It's probably for the best, though. I live in the three person room, but there is a room of five girls! We live at the top of five brutal flights of stairs. The combination of walking, the stairs, and lack of food will add up to everyone losing at least ten pounds, I'm sure. We're still finding our footing and of course have 90% of London and 100% of Europe to explore, but we are adjusting well and becoming fast friends!!
Love, Kali
