DAY 4 Exploring the Lost World!! After all the whiskey lastnight I managed to sleep really well and wake just as breakfast was being served. Today we had Arepas and omelette again and hot coffee which at nearly 3000 meters up surely is a treat. It was already raining and super cold out so we started trekking by 7am. I couldn't help but feel like we were walking on the moon and the silence along with the thick layer of fog created an eary feeling in all of us. We crossed through streams and flooded valleys and my feet and socks were soaked within the first hour. We walked through incredible valleys, more crystal covered paths and in and around huge crater like environments on top of this strange mountain. We had a lot of walking to do today (around 20 km) and so our stops were short which none of us minded as the cold came on twice as strong when we stopped. We came to this incredible hole in the ground about 30 meters across and 40 meters down with beautiful crystal clear waters at its base and a slowly trickling waterfall at its side. Everywhere we looked was something out of this world and none of us new how to accept what we were seeing. After 4-5 hours of hiking we came to the Triboarder (halfway point) of Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana - we got some really nice photos and sat enjoying the scenery before the cold came again and we were off to find a nice place to have lunch. We were all super hungry and for lunch were given a mayonnaise soaked salad with tuna and more Arepas - even though that's all I have been eating (Arepas) it is still a welcome treat when your so hungry. At the end of lunch Jose brought out a jar of banana jam (I had been asking him everyday if he had) and the last arepa I covered in the delicious banana jam (unfortunately we never soar the jam again - am guessing Jose and the porter enjoyed it at our expense). The lunch stop was short as we had another 15 odd kilometers to walk to get to the highest point of Mount Roraima where all the famous photos are taken. The walk was very long and tiring and we walked through some very muddy marshes and at one point Yuki managed to get stuck in the mud. It took like 10 minutes to get Yuki and his crocs out and by the end he was covered in mud and quite a sight to see. When we arrived to the base of the highest point we could tell Jose didn't want to continue and was trying to talk us out of it, luckily Po and her bustling bag of energy fired us all up and we all agreed to give it a crack. The hike up was difficult but when we arrived we were met by the most spectacular site of the whole trip - an edge of the world type cliff looking down onto the clouds. Words really can't describe the views and the feeling we all got standing ontop of this incredible mountain - the weather changed every 2 minutes from pouring rain to sunshine to thick fog all creating a magical ambiance. None of us wanted to leave and we stayed as long as we could before the cold and grumpy Jose forced us down. Po and I were so full of joy and gave each other a huge hug - one of the moments of complete joy where you could cry. When we got back to camp it was late and dinner was served and tonight it was awsome: mince meat and vegetables in a spivey sause and the best thing there was plenty of it - we all ate ourselfs silly and Shoku also gave me all her Arepas she had not eaten during the day - perfect for a midnight snack. And then came the greatest treat of all Hot Chocolate - we had been promised it all week and they had finally came through (they had a huge bag of it but unfortunately we only got it once). With a full belly and a smile ear to eat I climbed into my tent and sleeping bag and nodded off to sleep with all the wonderful thoughts of one of the best days of my life.
