After an early nights sleep I was up super early this morning looking forward to our free breakfast at the hostel. I was met by the lady in the kitchen who runs the hostel only to find that she would not be giving us breakfast today for whatever reason. We packed up and headed off at about 8am and I gladly told the lady running the hostel that she would be receiving $1 less as we had agreed on breakfast. The hardest thing about Peru is the fact that everyone is trying to rip you off and deceive you, we pay atleast double for everything and they will try anything from short changing to flat out lying to you. The beginning of the walk along the train tracks was difficult and I could really feel the pain in my legs about a third of the way along we met Marti an awkward and incredibly clumsy Argentinian. We walked fast and only stopped once for a snack break meaning we arrived at our destination within two hours instead of three. The scenery was superb; subtropical jungle with many animals and plants, I found many avocados that had fallen from the wild avocado trees and chucked them in my pack for later. When we arrived at Hydraelectrica I flagged a collectivo down and it took us straight to Santa Maria - the drive was rough, dusty and in the end we had the car packed with 7 people. We waited and waited at Santa Maria for the bus but it never came, this big truck full of car engines offered us a lift to Cusco for about $4 so us along with 5 other Argentineans jumped onboard and made our way to Cusco. The truck was very tall and jam packed full of car engines so we spent 6 hours in very uncomfortable positions and constantly diving under all the equipment out of the view of the police. At first it was stinking hot and we did our best to keep out of the burning sun but as we climbed higher up the mountains we faced freezing conditions and covered ourselfs with everything we had. It was certainly an adventure but I wouldn't do it again and in the end the driver dropped us miles away from Cusco and we had to taxi the remainder of the way. What a day it had been, we went to Ronnie's hostel and picked up the keys to his apartment where we would be staying the next few days. I decided to cook dinner for Cris and so when and brought some stuff from the market to cook a mince and vegetable stew, Cris brought the wine and we enjoyed a good meal and a very nice bottle of Peruvian red wine.
