Puerto Escondido!! Waking up today I new it was time to go so after some breakfast I said goodbye to Flors Mum and got a lift to Pochutla with Flor. From here I had to take a bus along the coastal road to Puerto Escondido - about 1 hour north. We arrived in Puerto Escondido a lot faster then I had expected and as I wanted to stay just out of town at La Punta I had to stop bus as we had already gone passed the la Punta turn-off. I walked into the neighborhood and was pleasantly suprised by its rustic style, gravel roads and lack of tourist infrastructure. Puerto Escondido is renowned for being touristic and because of the world class waves attracts a wide array of tourists. I had looked up a hostel on hostelworld and managed to find it whilst walking around: Akumal Hostel owned and run by a cool dude called Erick. I chatted to Erick and Louis his worker for a while and they offered to do me a good deal on a room or a dorm bed as the hostel was almost empty but had been full for last 2 weeks. I hung out at the hostel a while before heading into the little town centre and doing some more asking about rooms and buying a board. I talked to a few surf shops and figured I would rent a board to see if it is something I am going to get into before forking out for a board. I settled on a dorm bed for about $6 a night at Ericks and then made some eggs on tortillas for lunch. After lunch I was straight down the surf shop to rent a board and for $8 for 24 hours it was pretty good value; the guy even chucked in his rasht for me. My first look at the point where they surf here was a little frightening; big left-hander with about 30 people already out. I strapped on my leash and headed out and wow within minutes I realized how bloody hard this surfing thing is. I must admit sitting out on the water watching the waves was the true highlight and the feeling of peace was priceless. However with a bunch of people all competing for a limited amount of waves I only got about two waves that I ended up face planting. Haha should have rented a bodyboard!! After a few hours I was back to the beach to sit and watch the sunset and this was easily one of the nicest sunsets I have seen anywhere and tommorow night I will come down with my camera and try and get some shots. Maybe my surfing days have passed and I should just be content watching sports like surfing and photographing beautiful beach towns. When the sun went down all of the Mosquitos came out so it was a quick walk to the supermarket and then back to the hostel. The hostel was very quiet in the evening and there was just one other Brazilian guy staying so I chatted with him for a bit before heading to bed.
