After a freezing night and barely any sleep I was up at 7am ready to catch a lift to town with Xavier and Tere and make my way south to Castro for the day. At around 8:45am we drove into town and Xavier dropped me off on the road out of town leading to Castro; the aim being to hitchhike the 80km south to Castro. I wouldn't have waited 20 minutes before being picked up by this young guy who works in Castro as a Police Officer. My driver spoke no English so the conversation was slightly difficult but we managed to communicate enough to share some stories and information and I realized how good hitchiking would be for helping me improve my Spanish. We arrived in Castro and my driver so kindly dropped me off at the main tourist site; The Palafitos; which were houses of all colours and styles built on stilts sitting over the water. After a few quick photos I headed towards downtown to visit the bright yellow church and get some tourist info. As there wasn't much else to look at in Castro after the church I decided to head North to Dalqaui and from their over to one of islands. I took a local bus all the way to Anchau (a small town on the island off of Dalqaui) which took me just over an hour and included a short ferry crossing. The town of Anchau was pleasant enough with a beautiful old wood church at its centre, I had some lunch and walked around until the rain started. I took another bus back to Dalqaui and the bus driver tried to rip me off and told me i needed to pay more because I was a tourist - instead of arguing I payed him and tried not to let it bother me. My next step was to try and hitchhike back to Ancud but after a few strange looks and some strange hand gestures from drivers I figured it wouldn't work from where i was in downtown - tends to work better from outskirts. Luckily a bus came past that was heading to Ancud so I jumped on and got a ride. An hour and a half later and I had arrived in Ancud downtown from where I walked out to the turnoff for Lechagua (where I was staying). I hitched a ride out to the house and much to my surprise the car turned out to be an unmarked taxi and the guy tried charging me an exuberant amount for a 3 minute ride - I explained I only had $1 in change and that would be all he would get. When I arrived back at the house there was no one home so I took a bath and did a few things before the others arrived back. In the evening we sat around chatting and eating leftovers from yesterday's Curanto. Unfortunately the day old mussels went straight through me and had me rushing to the toilet all night.
