I had decided to make my way south to Chiloe today so I was up early getting my things together. The two Russians were off to the airport at 8am so Karina had made us all some traditional Dal Masala tea she had brought whilst in India along with some of her Mums famous Christmas cake. Her Mother actually sells the Christmas cake at the shops and you can see why it would be a big seller with a deliciously moist centre with thick pieces of fruit and nut and a sweet whit icing. After saying goodbye to the Russians I gave Karina a few things of mine to hold onto for safe keeping and then said my goodbyes and organized to return on Friday. I walked about 20 minutes to the bus stop and caught the first bus heading to the bus terminal, on arrival I found a bus heading south to Chiloe so I booked my ticket and I was off. The trip was only two hours and there was a short ferry crossing in the middle (Chiloe is an Island) and 30 minutes later we arrived in the capital of Chiloe - Ancud. I tried to call my hosts but unfortunately I couldn't get through so I followed their directions to take a collectivo out to the outskirts of the town and then attempt to hitchhike the next 5km out to their house. I only waited about 20 minutes before a nice guy called Christian picked me up - I had a really good chat with him and he asked if I would like him to show me around the town tommorow afternoon so that he could practice his English. This is why hitchiking is so great; a lift, meeting a local and then being invited to be shown around; I Ofcourse agreed and would meet Christian again tommorow. Arriving at the house of Tere, Xavier and Danni was a real treat; 3 big beautiful dogs, a huge green house and a new (made to look old) 2 story wood cabin. I met the guys and they are all wonderful - the girls speak no English but Xavier is French and speaks English well. Tere's Mother raises turkey and had given them a turkey for New Years celebrations - however since the plan was to have a traditional Curanto for New Years they had decided to cook the Turkey today and have like a second Christmas dinner. They really went all out with the turkey - slowly cooking it, stuffing it with a delicious mix of vegetables and salsa, roast vegetables of every kind, cheese stuffed peppers and traditional Chilean salads. Some friends came around to join us and brought some red wine but first Xavier ran around and welcomed everyone with a shot of their homemade cherry Aguardiente. They make absolutely everything here and grow all their own vegetables, herbs and fruits, make jams and everything else in between. The wine was flowing and the table was set and out came the huge turkey roast - we were all starving hungry and took huge chunks of turkey which for me included the best part the leg, I piled my plate to the rim and enjoyed one of the best meals of my life. The turkey was moist and fell off the bone, the roast vegetables were mouthwatering delicious, the salads fresh, the wine perfectly complimenting and smiles all around - we are and ate and drank and an hour later we could eat no more. The traditional (Argentinian) Herba Mate came out and some preserved cherries and we spent another few hours chatting and enjoying one another's company. It had started to rain a lot and we had agreed as soon as it would stop we would drive out to a beach on the coast for a look and if the weather allowed a walk. The weather cleared and we drove out to this really nice beach on the peninsular - the wind was belting in and the sea was angry and sky's were cloudy and to go with that the beach was made up of millions of small lava like black rocks - making for some incredibly scenery. We took photos, walked along the beach and at the headland found this cave that we ventured out to. It was really nice just hanging out with a bunch of cool people even if I could only converse well with one of them. After we returned to the car we collected some rocks, stocks and huge ferns for the Curanto and then headed back. In the evening the friends came back around with more wine and we made some more food for a midnight dinner. The girls made fried bread, I made a salad using the leftover turkey and the others made some more salads. By 1am we were all tired and decided to head to bed and I couldn't help but think how lucky I had been today and all days being invited to partake in the life's of people I had never met.
