Day 18
The weather is unsettled. No typhoon signal. The table and chairs are back out and we have no plans. It's the weekend so expect everywhere to be busy.
We start in Shatin as it's a 5min shuttle bus away. Annoyingly, I can't connect to wifi. Su-Yin and I head to Sai Kung on #299 for a change of scenery. On the path past the old village to the bus stops, wild monkeys are feeding in the trees. A photo opportunity.
The #299 is a scenic route which takes you on the Sai Sha Road, past dad's village and beautiful scenery of Three Fathoms Cove. Sit on the left for the best views. Sai Kung is renowned for it's seafood restaurants. Michael Hutchence grew up around here. You can buy fresh fish from the harbour boats. Point to want you want. It will be passed to the man sitting at the chopping board who will kill, descale and gut for you before it's passed to you in a plastic bag on the end of a long pole.
A party boat pulls up with about 15-20 youngsters on board. The table is strewn with cups, cans, bottles and plastic bags. There's a banana boat on top, several big body boards and a rack of life jackets. The best beaches are accessible from Sai Kung. You have to get there by boat (kaidos) and some involve a hike the other end. There's also access to HK's only public golf course from a jetty. All sounds fun if you know where you're going and with a big group. We amble the little roads and alleyways where the cafe menus seem quite reasonable compared to the main promenade. Lots of people either own or show off their dogs here; small toy dogs immaculately groomed to big dogs.
It's a lovely evening, with the sun setting behind the mountains creating mystical cloud levels. There are more good views on the way back, but the bus ride is far too fast and bumby to get any decent photo shots.
