Day 1 We touch down about 1530 local time after 4 hours on the bus, 5 hours wait at Heathrow and 12 hours flight. Coincidently we've travelled from one of the world's 'most loathed' airports to 'The most loved' (source: Skytrax).
Dad is waiting after we've collected maps and info. from immigration, and he kindly has our Octopus cards so we can roam on all modes of transport, get drinks or umbrellas from vending machines, pay for supermarket shopping and as it turns out, do our laundry! How convenient everything is in Hong Kong.
So we catch the airport bus, which has big racks for big suitcases, to Causeway Bay. Not so convenient is the walk to The Cosmpolitan along Canal Road West on bumpy narrow pavements amongst pedestrians, stalls and traffic, with wonky wheels on our suitcases. I did pack the phillips screwdriver. I get a glimpse into the narrow sidestreets with local market stalls of Wanchai.
Our room has a partial view of Happy Valley racetrack which is fully illuminated as it is Happy Wednesday; race night! And that's where we are heading, to the public entrance. Octopus cards pay the $10 (85p) entrance fee. And what a sight. A surreal experience with bright green world class race track surrounded by high rise blocks and mountains and it's about 28c. Illegal activity No.2, a cold beer for the lads oh, and a McDonalds burger. A Lady GaGa lookalike is parading around happy to have pictures taken, staff in blue uniforms will help you understand the betting and there's a small stage with local bands/artists performing between races.
We get a taxi back into Causeway Bay and stop off for noodles before walking dad to the MTR. I think the underground at Times Square has the longest walkway, seems at least half a mile to the trains.
Should be tired after being on the go for over 48 hours (I travelled straight after 11 hour night shift) but must be the excitement that prevents us from getting a good sleep!
