That weekend (last weekend), I decided not to go to Pompeii with the rest of the group, so I stayed in Rome to save some money. Ashley, Nick, Mario and Jimmy also stayed in Rome from the group. I was excited to finally get some sleep and relax a little bit after a hectic two weeks.
On Friday, I slept in super late and then me and Ashley decided to go to the Colosseum later on because I wanted to get some pictures since my camera died last time on our tour. I kept on thinking about how cool it was that on a day off I just decided to stop by the COLOSSEUM, whereas people come from all around the world and get to see it once. It made me realize how awesome it was that I was living in Rome. After the Colosseum, and moving around the millions of tourists (i know count myself out of that group) we decided to get some American food at this Irish pub we went to before. I got some nachos, and they were amaaaazzzinggggg. We went home very full and then got ready and went back out downtown and met up with the rest of the people who stayed in Rome. We basically just hung out at Piazza Navona and then all decided to go back for some more sleep.
The next day I got to sleep in again! It was the best feeling ever. Earlier in the week, we heard rumors that at the end of the gay pride parade on Saturday, lady gaga was going to do a free concert to promote the cause. Of course Ashley and I decided we wanted to go in a second. So we pooled our resources and did some research on where the concert was, where the parade was, how to get to the parade, etc. etc. I feel so handy being able to figure out how to get all over Rome. So we hopped on the bus and then went to Circus Maximus where she would later be playing. We then walked to the Colosseum and walked around, including down "Gay Street" (don't know why but their was a banner saying it was) and got some rainbow accessories. We then waited around 20 min until finally the parade came. It was NUTS. You could instantly tell how Italian the parade was by how unorganized it was. Nothing like the U.S. parades. Their were floats and such, but you could barely see any banners because the street was just PACKED with people. It was basically just a crowd of people moving at Glacier pace down the street. Whoever wanted to join the parade, could. It was hilarious. After 20 min of watching it, we saw enough and then walked to Circus Maximus to get our spot for Lady Gaga.
We got to our spot around 7 pm and waited for about 2 hours before Gaga came on. My back and feet were killing me. However, it was worth it. We were only 20 ft away fromt the stage! It wasn't too bad because before Gaga came on they had a multitude of drag queens dressed up in the most elaborate, weird outfits come on stage and strip. It was hilarious because this probably wouldn't of been allowed in the U.S. My favorite was the Gladiator stripper.....only in roma. Finally, after what felt like yearrrrssss of waiting, Gaga came on stage and walked on like she was queen of the world. She came on, held her hands up and said "Ciao, Roma!" haha everyone went WILD. This blog picture is when she said that. It's amazing to me how she can create a feeling of power about her. She knows how to gain attention and create it too. I almost welled up because I felt so emotional finally seeing her in person. Her stage presence is amazing, even when she's just standing there. She gave a pretty long speech about how we need to accept any kind of love, and while it was very inspirational, it went on for a long time. I can only imagine how annoyed the Italians were getting because most of them couldn't understand her. I thought she would of at least had some translation on screen. After her speech she played two songs on the piano, "Born this Way" and "Edge of Glory" which is a song on her new album. She was amazing. Of course everyone wants to know what she was wearing, and she sported a turqoise short wig and a phenomenal donatella versace (have to stick to an italian designer) dress. It had a huge black and white skirt that she took off in the middle of one of her songs and laid it across her piano. (you can see the performance on youtube) She is sooooo talented. After she was done (I wish she had played more) me and Ashley were exhausted and got home, pretty quickly, surprisingly. I couldn't believe how many people were there, at LEAST 2 million. The streets and the entire Circus Maximus was full. It was worth it. Overall, great weekend for staying in Rome.
