Travelling Millers
Day 6 dawns cold and fine in Barcaldine. This is a beautiful small town, impressive in its attention to its heritage and street scape. The main attraction is the Memorial to the Tree of Knowledge, famous as the site the sharers gathered in 1891 to fight the bosses pay cuts and ensure 'the sheds 'll be shore union'! The actual tree was poisoned 100 years later by persons unknown. It is the birthplace of the ALP effectively. There is also a wonderful Workers Heritage Centre here, with exhibitions relating to the many types of work done to produce the current Australia - rural, roads, mail, medical, SES, education etc. Lots of info re unions and politicians too.
