The drive from Utrecht to Lathum was a little longer than we'd expected but it was well worth it in the end. The Camperstop was on the edge of a marina overlooking the boats. This one was €8.50 a night but there were showers and toilets we could use. There's only about 6 spots to park in, but only three vans were there and we managed to grab the end space so we had our own little garden area between the van and some bushes. We immediately got out the table and chairs and cracked a beer. The sun was just setting, Becci was watching the water birds with her binoculars, and I just sat and chilled. Bliss. We eventually got round to cooking and then called it a night.
The next day we'd planned to go to one of the places i went to when I was here with school. It's a sculpture garden/museum in the middle of a country park, that you can ride free bikes around. We got majorly lost on the way, and when we got there we found out that although the bikes are free, it costs €8 to enter the park, and then a further €8 for the sculpture garden. Bit of a swiz if you ask me! We decided that we could live without the sculptures, but the bike ride was worth it, especially as we'd packed a picnic. So off we trundled for our leisurely cycle. It was pretty murky weather when we left, and it had even rained on the drive there, so Becci was in jeans and a hoody and I was in mandatory holiday shorts (I haven't worn trousers yet, and I don't intend to for the next 2 months) and a jumper. About 15 minutes into the ride we get out of the woods and onto a heath and the sun is BLAZING. Fortunately we packed water. You'd think the strong wind would have helped with the heat but we were cycling straight into it, so we had to work twice as hard which just made us hotter. But we eventually got to the middle of the park, where we stopped on a little hill with a tree on top and had our picnic. I checked my phone cos I'd started a route tracker at the start and we'd already done 13km. We were pretty knackered though. Becci had to talk me out from laying under my tree, cos I was comfy and full and sleepy. But we got back on, and the cycle back wasn't so bad. It seemed to be more downhill than up, and the wind was behind us now. we were pretty chuffed having completed a 26km bike ride, and drove back happy but tired, to the marina to stay a second night. We spent the evening watching a pair of Coots build a nest on the back step of a yacht just in front of us while the sun went down. We really liked this spot. The next day we were planning to head to Belgium so were glad we got to leave the Netherlands on a happy note.
