G'day sports!! I know it's been a while since I last blogged but as you know, I'm down under. I've been busy setting myself up with jobs and accommodation and eating good food but I shall back to that in a minute.
Firstly, just want to talk about when I first arrived. And so I left Bali at 9:30pm (Bali time) for my flight to Melbourne. Of which I arrived at 5am (Ozzy time). We were shattered as you could imagine. There was a free shuttle service from the airport to our hostel which was great! It was so cold and all I had was a hoody. However, our stupid hostel wouldn't let us in, not even the reception until 9am. So we had to chill in Mcdonalds over the road until then. Hostels out here are so strange compared to any of those in Asia. First it's so expensive, plus nobody talks to each other. It felt like I was definitely back in the western world where no one talks to strangers and they all just sit on their phones. On our first few days we spent sorting out setting up bank accounts, sim cards, tax number ect. The most annoying thing about Australia was they don't offer free wifi anywhere so they charge a bomb to use it. And so i found it difficult to sort things out and to know where i need to go without internet. I spent my first week just applying for so many jobs online, through facebook pages, handing my CV out and asking people or friends if they know of any jobs. Got one job lined up in our first week, setting up conference centres which is boring work, very physically demanding, but decent pay ($22 an hour = £11) and good hours. In our first week we spent one whole day just searching for accommodation as we did not want to stay in these hostels anymore!! We were so lucky to find an apartment with a twin shared room for me and Kyle with two single beds, balcony, right in the city. With all bills included, even wifi, and a gym, sauna and swimming pool. Struck gold really, as many people take a long time to find accommodation. Even better they wanted us to move in with a few days which was perfect.
I also got a full time job in a sales calling job, but it's not as bad as it sounds. As I actually don't need to sell anything, I'm just offering existing customers if they want to accept an offer. Plus I recently had an interview for a prestige hotel and entertainment complex which pays really good money ($28 an hour) to be a waiter or bartender. Really posh place, they even provide and dry clean your uniform, everyday!!
Once I was settled and sorted out work and accommodation and eating and cooking all my favourite foods. We have Aldi right over the road plus a food market, so I am able to eat good again...finally!
However about Melbourne. I really like the city, there is loads going on. Lots of really cool bars and restaurants and live music ect. They have the biggest tram system in the world, its so handy. Plus all the trams are free to use within the city, which is perfect as everything you need and work is in the city. I most love how clean and modern the city is but there are s*** loads of Chinese, Koreans and Vietnamese here. And quite a few homeless about too. Not done much touristy stuff here yet, I don't think I need to as it's all a rip off! But I do want to come back here in the summer when it's actually warm here. We are still deciding what we need to do about doing our regional work which will allow us to extend our visa for another year! But I would rather get my regional done now whilst it's winter but this means it's out of season for most things so I might need to travel to Perth to do my regional asap! The Australian people are really cool, absolutely love the British, especially the employers. They are quite racist, they are so happy when they see that were from the UK, which makes it much easier to find a job. The people in my apartment who are Korean and Turkish have found it so difficult to find jobs, and they are being ripped off with their wages. So much more to talk about but I cant be arsed to type it all out haha. When I get the chance I shall write some more, once I've been here a while.
