Today is the day of long haul flying, kill me now. I woke up at 7:30am. First flight, Cairns to Sydney took 4 hours. Then the next flight, Sydney to Beijing which took 12 hours. Arrived in s***y Beijing as it was pouring down and every person I encountered was either rude or just didn't say anything or didn't want to help. Our flight was delayed for 3 hours and was waiting around for 5 hours, absolute piss take. I just wanted to get into my hotel and sleep properly, eat and shower. Calculated our total travel time and it was appropriately 42 hours or more. I have never experienced jet lag before, but my god, I felt it this time round. Wasn't expecting to fly from Beijing to New York, right over the North Pole, I thought the flight route would of been across Europe or the Pacific.
New York is an amazing city with so much to see. It felt like I was constantly in a film. Strangely, every time I watch a American film now, it looks just how New York is. Not sure if I could live there though, was too busy, but never say never. Constantly looking up at the huge skyscrapers then by the black street performers or a homeless person asking for money. I thought Melbourne had it bad for homeless but New York isn't far off. The worst part about New York was our sleeping pattern. We wanted to sleep during the day and when we finally got in bed, we were wide awake. I had it worse due to this stupid head cold which I've had over 2 weeks now and partially deaf in one ear. The main highlights of New York have to be Times Square, World Trade Centre, Brooklyn Bridge, Rockafella centre and central park. So basically everywhere! Times Square was interesting with the mass amount of tourist and the strange, interesting characters dressed like Donald trump or girls who were naked but had paint on their genitalia. I would love to talk about everything I did but I did so much it would take me a long time, my advice would be to go New York and experience it yourself. Trying to find a normal supermarket in New York was a task, because we were staying in Queens but close to Manhattan side. There was only fast food take outs but we just wanted cereals and fruit for the morning. We did however eat out for the rest of the day. We eat hot dogs from the street hot dog stands, bagels, burgers, ice cream and the best pizza. This place is called Joe's Pizza and he has pictures of all the celebrities that have come in and bought pizza. Celebrities from Leonardo D'Capario to Mark Wahlberg, Danny Divito and Bradley Cooper. The pizza was so cheap too, I guess the celebrities love a good deal too. The ice cream I bought from the ice cream trucks was so expensive, it was $8. When I ordered it, I thought it was the $4 one but no the scamming cow said it was the $8 one.
One afternoon, all we wanted to do was to see this narrow building. But all the roads were blocked due to the Gay Pride parade. The parade was a mix of Caribbean carnival vibe with all the black people around but then you got an eyeful of the gay people, barely wearing anything. We finally saw the narrow building but what a mission. I couldn't believe how many Mexicans were in New York too. I heard more Spanish than English, which was good practice for my listening skills for Cuba. Even though I could barely hear.
Entry to New York was horrendous, as well as exiting. The queues for security checks at both ends would take close to an hour. We got there in good time so we was okay but people behind and in front were cutting it very fine to make their flight. And the airport staff would not help or assist and told them that they still had to queue. I did get the sense in New York that no one wanted to help and it felt like I was disturbing them when I asked a question about transport or visas. I guess that get questions all day everyday, but still. Trump towers and hotel are both huge, this guy has mega money. Has armed Police outside all his buildings, which he would have owned way before being President.
One top tip when going to top of the Rockafellas, is to buy a ticket in advanced so that you can go up there during peak times. We went up too late so it was really dark and the camera didn't pick much up. Therefore, I got some great photos off google just to give you an insight of the spectacular view of New York.
