So, I have had two scooter tours thus far with my neighbor who has been kind enough to take me around and show me where to buy things. Our first ride was on Saturday and we went to an organic market, a bakery, and a local fruit and veggie market. The organic market had a limited selection as the store front was so small, but everything was nice and not too expensive. The bakery, which is conveniently located next to the organic market had really nice fresh bread and pastries. I am really loving the bakeries here in China. Not only is it good fresh quality but's it so much cheaper that back home! At City Bakery (which is still my favorite bread) I would pay $3.50 for a croissant. Here I can get 7 croissants for that much. It's awesome! Whenever we go I always get like 10 pastries, all different kinds. This bakery, like all others in China, also have a good selection of savory pastries. They have little pizzas, and ham bread, and one thing I will never understand, the hot dogs in the puff pastry, which Ramz and Jack like...The fruit and veggie market was open air and pretty dirty inside, but lots of locals shop there. And surprisingly the produce was beautiful! Large selection of stuff. You can also get meat in there, from a man fanning the meat, which I bypassed. They also had tons of rice, winter coats of all things, various dishes in one corner...interesting place. I posted a few pictures of the market there. Good day, and the electric bike is a great way to get around! I think we may get one in the future! They don't go really fast, so don't freak out, Mom. I felt very safe the whole time despite the fact that neither of us, nor anyone in China for that matter, wore helmets. Yesterday we went on our second scooter ride to Metro, which is the German place here. It's a cross between a Lowe's and a Sam's Club. Really great selection of foods that I recognize and most importantly CHEESE! In case any of you don't know, China lacks cheese on an epic scale! However we found the garden of eden as far as cheese goes here! We walked around for a few minutes before we started hearing little rain drops on the roof above us. Then heavier rain drops and thunder. We got a few items, checked out, and when we walked out we thought we had missed it because it had stopped. We got on the bike with our goodies and started riding down the street. It started with tiny drops and then torrential downpour. It was so funny! Two very white, very blonde, Americans riding around on a scooter in the pouring rain! It was quite the journey back to the apartment! By the time I got here it looked as if I'd gone swimming in my clothes. Ramz just laughed. I think I made my peace with the rain. I may hate riding in cars in the rain but on a scooter it's actually quite exhilarating. More adventures on scooters to come, I'm sure. Thanks for adventure, China!
