Weds. September 23rd.Was supposed to rain all night but it only started early this morning and was still wet and cold 13 degrees when we left the house for today's outing which was to Philip Island. The main attraction on the island is the penguin parade which happens at dusk when the penguins come out of the sea and up the beach to their burrows to feed their young with the food they have caught out at sea.We have seen this twice so didn't want to go today especially as it would be perishing sat waiting for them tonight. Our first stop was the chocolate factory which was new to us, we think last time we were on the island it was a cheese/milk factory.Next the Nobbies and the seal rocks centre. We visited this place years ago when it was brand new and we remembered it having an up market restaurant (Joe had anti pasta and spilt a glass of water over it before he had eaten much and we reckon he did it on purpose then we would feel sorry for him and give him some of our chips) Anyway the café is now very down market and all chips .Also there was a good display of marine life and a theatre where on a big screen you could see live the seals out on the rocks you had to pay but it was worth it now the marine display is gone and to see the seals you have to put $5 in a machine and watch it on a screen about as big as a large TV you can take three photos with the machine during the 4 minutes your $5 buys you but you have to pay for the photos if you want them. The thing is you put your money in and soon gather a crowd around you watching for free we know because we saw a lady pay and we just stood behind her for a couple of minutes but we didn't have any say in when she took her 3 photos.Outside we tried to see the seals with our binoculars but they are not strong enough that's the binoculars not the seals. It was so windy and cold I wore a coat, scarf and gloves. The Nobbies are the rocks where the seals live. The area is also famous for its gull population who make their nests in the grass area on the cliffs so you walk down a boardwalk and the hundreds of gulls are there doing what comes naturally and then looking after the consequences we were very lucky and saw the eggs and chicks not the former.
