On the 28th march we left early for a 12 hour bus journey through the aussie outback to a cattle ranch in kroonbit (the largest in aussie covering miles and miles of land) on the way we saw lots of kangeroos hopping near the side of the road, we had to break a couple of times to avoid hitting them! There were loads of white cockatoos flying in the wild too just like we see pidgeons only a little more exciting! The cattle ranch was in the middle of nowhere and was quite eery as looked just like where the horro film wolf creek is set! we sat in the yard and ate beef soup with cornbread followed by a roast dinner, we tried goat meat which was tasty! We ate off tin plates and drak wine out of tin cups- very authentic! I couln't help thinking all these hillbillys were murderers though especially when they had signs up like 'send more tourists the last ones were delicious!'. All the men dressed like cowboys it was like we had gone back in time! We learned how to crack a whip, how to use a lasoo and how to play a didgiridoo as well as riding the rodeo mechanical bull!!! It was pouring with rain though we were swimming in mud but it was all part of the outdoor life we were experiencing and was completely different to the sailing on the searing boat last week- we do something different every day and its so varied and i love it!! The next day we had to get up at 5, have breakfast and take part in a goat muster which involved us going through the fields on horse back and roundingup the 300 free range goats into thier pen with the help of freddy the sheepddog! it was very fun but i was rterrified of my horse and it bucked a little which made my phobia worse. My horse was a 16 year old mare named chocolate and gems was called diamond. I felt like a real cowgirl hearding in the goats though and we had complete control of the horses to complete the task, it was raining still so the horses were skidding in the mud! Next we left the horses back at the ranch and crammed into the range rover across the ranch skidding and skiding in the mud and learned how to shoot a gun and how to wrestle a goat oddly enough- its a hobby of those people who live here and they have competionions and rodeos with the goats, i thought it was a little cruel but the goats didnt seem phased. We really got involved with the lifestlye here, eating their foos using pots and an open fire, learned the cowboys skills and got up at the crack of dawn to assit in the muster- it was great fun but i wouldnt want to do it every day and it definately didntcure my fear of horses- they are still dinosaurs to me and i told mine that as i jumped off! We headed off on another long bus journey to hervey bay where we would start our next adventure on the largest sand island which is fraser island. Our hostel at hervy bay was cool, more like an apartment that we shared with a few others with a kitchen and lounge. We caught up on laundry as living out of a rucksack and rtrying to air stuff is proving smelly!! Our first day in hevery bay we went to a multicultural festival bythe beach and watched all the dancing and looked round the stalls from round the world including china and the caribean. We were warned not to go in the sea because of sharks! There were camel rides being given along the beach, i was tempted but resited and let the children go instead. Gem and i burried each other in the sand and made each other into mermaids. In the evening we sat on the balcony with our cheap tea of kippers and rice and played cards ready for our early rise of 5am for our long awaited fraser island trip which i will tell you about soon. thwe interent shuts so early- i have so many photos to upload grrrr!!! speak soon, hope your ok. sorry for any mistakes im going at 100mph to catch up with this blog. got lots more to say but will do it tmorrow. its raining outside now! oh no!!! xx
