another bus journey took us on to noosa, a piece of exclusive surburbia located on sunshine coast where the young and wealthy come to get away from it all and is highlighted by the pricey boutiques and restaurants. Located 146km north of Brisbane, out next stop, noosa was orignially a sleepy little vilage beside the sea known only to a few fishermen and beachcombers. Noosa has a national park, a small coastal park in which small birds and mammals including koalas can be spotted amongst the trees. The bushwalks, beautiful scenery, string of bays and picnic spots all stand in sharp contrast to the urbanity of the nearby shopping centre.
On the way to noosa we went through austrailias most dangerous town named 'gympie'. It produces a lot of gold (austrailia is the 3rd most gold priducing country in the world after usa and south africa) but the reason it is most dangerous is due to the fact that it is the domestic violence and murder capital of oz!! Moving on swiftly!.... Noosa is famous for having many sightings of 'elvis'! We had a nice lunch in the food court (salmon and veg rissole with feta and poppyseed salad) and wandered about the smart steets and parks. I tried an aussie drink made with lemons, limes, angosta bark and tropical spices.
The next day was fun, we caught the shuttle bus to australia zoo, home of the late steve irwin 'crocodile hunter' ! It was rather sad seeing all his merchandise ad photographs as well as his tirbute where people had signed his zoo shirts in his memory. We even watched his pre-recoreded video on the bus that he made before he died. His daight and son still visit the zoo regulalry and bindi his daighter has her own slot which she does on school hols so we were a week late for that but we did see his little son bob playing the park. The zoo was great, although a little over-rated compared to seeing what we had already seen in thailand (elephants roaming in their natural habitat etc!) We got to hold a koala bear which was great, they are so cute!!! My favourite animals were the echidas which are big fat porcipine sytle creatures as well as the wombats and tasmanian devils which despite their names are quite shy and cuddly creatures. We got the oppotunity to feed the elephants by holding out our hands so they could take the veg with their trunk, that was cool! We saw a giant tortoise being cuddled and fed by the park ranger it must have been the size of a giant small table! Of course there was a big croc show and in true steve irwin style they did extreme stunts with the snakes and crocodiles! We watched as steves childhood crocdile whom he grew up with lurched for the meat in the keepers hand. It was enetertaining but nothing compared to the croc farm on the way to mission beach a few weeks ago- there was actual danger there and it wasnt as staged.
Next stop which is where we are now is Brisbane, I like it here it has been compared to london and is known tto the aussies as Bris-vagas! Although a large city, brisbane has the laid back nature of a country town and the people are cruisey and friendly. The city is well known for its parks and garndens which we spent some time wandering round and there was a lot of smart art statues and water features as well as the tall sky scrapers in the business district. Last night we met up with paul randomly who was in out travel group in malayisa so we went for a meal with him and his firned then today gem and i had a girly day shopping, exploring, trying on clothes and using beauty samples in bodyshop and went for a hot chocolate and a piece of cheesecake! For tea we are ahving carrot sticks and hummous to save money and trying to be healthy! update soon with pictures- got 1`50 to puut on argh!! xxx
