Oh my god this trip just keeps getting better! I loved fraser island, let me start from the beginnning... We got up at 5.45am in order to watch the promotional dvd which warned us not to swim in the sea due to sharks, to be careful of the dingoes (wild dogs!) and that 7 out of the most 10 deadly snakes in the world live in fraser island... so that was a nice welcome pack!! Fraser island is the largest sand island in the world which is pretty impressive so the trip basically involved hiring a 4 by 4 and driving off road over the sand dunes and around the island stopping at various lakes for a swim and creeks for a paddle and other beautiful sights located around the island. We were put in groups of 10 per car, we got a great bunch, 2 from LA, 6 from england and 2 from denmark but we joined up with another 2 cars to make one big group. We got the ferry over to the island and on the way we played chinese fire drill at the traffic lights which was basically when the lights were on red we all had to jump out, run round the car and jump back in before they turned green! It was hilarious and we got some funny looks from the other drivers/ pedestrians! We also did a supermarket shop on the way so we would have enough food for our 3 day trip and collected all our camping gear. When we arrived on the isdland off the ferry we drove rround the dirt tracks which were very bumpy and skiddy with us all crammed in the back we found a lake called wabby lake which was stunning- sand as far as the eye could see like a dessert with a lake surrounded by eucaliptus trees. We had a swim and headed back to the car for sarnies whilst watching the goanna's (half lizzard half dragon) circle the carpark. Next we set up our camp along the beach alongside the other 2 vans and had a bbq till it got dark. It was a little scary when it was dark as every so often we would see a dingo and scream! they didnt harm us though (a few weeks ago a little boy was killed by one!) one of the boys in our group got his bag stolen by a dingo and he found it up on the hill the next day- checcky dingo!! Also we were using the car headlights as lighting but the battery went flat and just in true teen horror movie style a man in a big truck happens to pop by in the dark and offer to help if we give hinm a beer, my imagination was in over drive but he did help and leave so we were grateful of no murders! We met some isreali people who were quite insulting about english people but dont worry i stuck up for us. We did some salsa dancing on the sand and had competitions to see who was best! It was tranquil being in the middle of nowhere surrounded by sand and the independence of camping with a lovley bunch of people was amazing! I had a go at driving the 4WD and i loved it but it was quite skiddy on the sand, i miss dirivng though! We passed a snake on the beach i think it had been hit by a car and we saw some planes landing on the beach which was cool. The next day we had a long drive to the other side of the island (at one point getting stuck in the sand!) and saw the old shipwreck which is basically a big rusty titanic which washed up on the shore years ago. I will put the pics up shortly when i can find a comp which works!! We went to the champagane pools which were pretty little pools of water with the waves fizzing over the rocks and looked like champagne, hence the name. We found another campsite the following night and set up there whilst watching the sunset over the sea which was pretty. Here we had a campfire and ate pasta using our gas stove. We were awoken in the morning by dingoes howling round the tent!!
In the morin we moved on down some very steep and bumpy off road driving in the van to the stunning lake mackenzie which was immese- huge open waters foerming a kale but a turquiose colour and quite warm so we played games and did a human pyramid in the water. I could have stayed there all day it was gorgeous. On the ferry on the way home we saw dolphins leaping out of the water! All in all fraser island was a unique and memorable experience both for the fun we had there and for its natural beauty. However the sand got EVERYWHERE and im still noticing it days later!
