After Noosa we headed north to Hervey Bay where we had our 3 day 2 night tour over to Fraser Island. We went on a group self 4WD trip which was lots of fun, and there were 11 of us in total. On our first day there we went to the most beautiful lake that we have ever seen called Lake Mackenzie, it really was picture perfect and was so stunning. The sand was white and the water was crystal clear. It was so lovely to swim in aswell as you didnt have to worry about any crazy sharks or jellyfish getting you- which has been our main fear whilst being here in Australia.
Fraser Island is a sand island and hence the reason for the need of a 4WD. Lets just say the tracks were rather bumpy and we were constantly laughing as we were being thrown around our truck, although at some point our crazy driver Matt was driving too fast and we were all bouncing everywhere. We also had to drive along the beach as that was one of the main roads on the island- so random but so cool. That afternoon we set up our tents along the beach, which was a very idealic location, and then made ourselves a nice pasta dinner, followed by an evening full of games.
We woke up early the next day to the beautiful sunrise, the colours in the sky out here really are spectacular, and then we headed on to visit a ship wreck on the island that has been there for 70 years, it was very impressive, as much as erosion has made lots of it disappear you can definately still make out the frame. After which we went to Indian heads which is a high cliff on the island where you can see sharks and stingrays in the sea, of which we saw both and was really excited about this. Its so great to see these animals in the wild instead of always seeing them in the aquariums etc. We also went to 'Champagne pools' which are two pools next to the sea where the sea water is constantly being swept into them over the rocks surrounding the pools. These pools were lovely, and again the water was gorgeous and clear, so we went for a swim in there and we could see tiny little black and white stripy fish. Once again we found a lovely place to camp that evening and had a nice bbq on the beach, was very yummy. That evening we got invited over to another group who had set up tents near to ours and who had a camp fire going so we (Jo and me- the others all went to bed at 8pm) went over and played a few games with them before going to bed.
The next day was another early rise and our first stop was at Eli Creek which was a small river running though a creek. A few people from our group decided to walk through it and two of the girls decided to swim in it- crazy loons, as it was way too early to be swimming and very chilly so Jo and Me just decided to walk back on the path instead. We then went on an hour walk to another lake called Lake Wabby, which was also very nice but not as lovely as Lake Mackenzie and the water wasn't as clear, but it was nevertheless very nice and glad we went to see it. After lake Wabby we then went back to Lake Mackenzie for the afternoon before having to catch our ferry back to Hervey Bay.
We met some really nice peole on our trip and have spent the last few days in Hervey Bay with a few off them. We met a lovely german guy called Chris who was hilarious and we all got on so well but he had to leave yesteday, it's always as if we are saying goodbye to people, but we are definately building a global network of friends worldwide which is great. Theres not too much to do in Hervey Bay itself but we have just been chilling and catching up on a few things and look forward to our Whitsundays trip next. Hopefully the weather will be nice. We were so lucky on Fraser island as we had lovely weather, and the day after we got back it turned quite cloudy. All in all Fraser Island was definately one of our highlights especially Lake Mackenzie which is a must see for anyone doing the East coast of Australia.
