What a day! We are sore, tired and sun-kissed from a big day of walking round Rome, but all very worth it :)
We started the day with another buffet breakfast at the cafe across the piazza from our hotel. It was very tasty and this was the first place we've been to for breakfast that had bacon and eggs, so that was nice.
After breakfast we headed off in search of the colosseum. Using our tip from the Canadians yesterday we purchased our tickets at the roman Forum for both this, Palatine Hill and the colosseum. This proved to be a very wise move as the queues at the colosseum were huge and we skipped right by them all.
First we walked through the ruins at Arco di Tito which were pretty cool. We got to see old vases, glass jars and mosaics from 1st century AD. The day was heating up so any chance to be in the shade was appreciated. Onto Palatine Hill and basically the same types of ruins.
Then we came to the Colosseum. It's amazing in our rush yesterday getting to the tour we completely didn't notice it peaking out from behind Monumento a Vittorjo Emmanuele ii. We set up the Lego tourists in the best vantage point and when we were about to start photographing a lady came up and asked if she could take a picture of them. Everyone's really loved seeing them and we've had a few comments when setting the up. With the lego photos done it was time to photograph ourselves and to also take time to look at the monument. We managed to skip the line for the colosseum and walk right in. A few laps around, dodging other people's photos and pausing to take in the enormity of the monument, it really is an amazing sight. And to think that they put so many slaves to death here either fighting other slaves or fighting animals. Not all the slaves died though, if you were injured you could request mercy from the emperor and perhaps get saved. I don't know which mercy would be better.
Outside the Colosseum we found the best drink stand ever. Selling frozen water and powerade. We bought a few bottles and enjoyed the cool since the days here have been in the low to mid 30's.
Refreshed and off to the Spanish steps. Not as cool as I'd thought. Just a bunch of stairs with a semi nice view of some of the streets around. We were again harassed by a guy selling roses, trying to convince us that roses were good luck for a marriage.
Onto the Trevi Fountain. This is a beautiful monument. The detail in the statues is exquisite. The water was so nice and cool, but they were telling people to stop putting their hands in. We threw our 2 cents in, literally. They still use one and two cent coins here.
Exhausted and sufficiently lobstered, we trudged back to the hotel and collapsed in the air con. In the late evening we ventured out again to find dinner. Spaghetti bolognase and spaghetti with seafood. Very tasty. A mini individual sized vienetta each for dessert and back into the air con.
Washing day tomorrow, let's hope we don't have anymore clothes that decide to hide or go missing. Next stop Poland.
Bueno notte
