Right now in Moscow it's 5 degrees Fahrenheit. In Minneapolis, it's 33! Hopefully the trend of it being 28 degrees colder in Moscow than in Minneapolis does not continue into January. I have now purchased a new coat that is longer, puffier, and much warmer in general. I find myself wondering, as I walk around bundled up yet still shivering, what babushkas and other frequently cold people do in this weather. There's only so much clothing you can wear! Many women here wear long, luxurious fur coats. At first I thought this was to look elegant, but I've heard that fur is actually quite warm. Even if I could afford a fur coat, I'd probably just worry about getting it dirty on the metro and never wear it.
This past fall before the heat came on, our apartment was very cold. We were worried that it would be cold all winter. However, when the heat was activitated someone apparently turned it on full blast. So then it was too hot for a couple months and we had to open the windows. As it got colder outside, though, we opened the windows less and less. Now we never open them and it's once again too cold in the apartment. We might have to invest in a space heater, or sweaters with some kind of heat technology.
The sun is out again today, which is great, but I can't decide if I prefer sunshine and extreme cold or cloudiness and only normal cold. We were warned about the Russian winter and it appears to be here for awhile. The 10-day forecast shows that on Christmas (December 25, not the Orthodox Christmas which is celebrated here in January) it will be 25 degrees F. Even if the warming trend turns out to be true, we are still guaranteed a white Christmas in Moscow. Happy Holidays!
