I'm off like a bag of prawns on a hot day!
Hi y'all,
I have been spending the past few days in a resort called Last Beach. The journey from Phuket involved to boats across (one well equipped and large, the other less so) and a brief stop off in Ko Phi Phi. When I got to the dock in Ko Lanta I was quickly hustled into a car, and then removed and put into the correct car as it would appear that someone was trying to poach me for their resort! It was a forty five minute drive to the resort, in the back of a pick up and I did well not to completely burn my skin in the blazing 12 o'clock sunshine! The last two miles of the road are completely undeveloped, so the journey was quite hectic. I was thankful to be in a 4x4, but not thankful that there was a bucket of fish edging towards me with every bump!!
The resort itself is very basic, but I have my own cabin, with a double bed and en suite shower and a toliet that smells of sewage. Thailand favours the toilet paper in a bin, and throwing a bucket of water down instead of a flush, which is something I've just about got the hang of! Of course, although my room is private, I do have to share with a number of resident gheccos, who enjoy talking to me at night, and about a thousand mossies and ants!
The first night was spent getting ludicrously drunk on the dreaded Thai buckets, whilst playing drinking games. The residents of Last Beach include a fellow brit called Gemma, two norweigans named Ewan and Asbjorn, and two irish lads called Jody and John. The drinking games were a plenty and the buckets full of Thai whiskey, red bull and coke. The result was a very sick Jenny falling asleep in my bathroom!!
Thankfully the next night was more sober and prepared me for an early morning wake up call as we went camping in a national park. This was really good, though ten people in the back of a pick up means some of the boys have to dangle dangerously over the edge. The camping trip was spent mainly snorkelling and of course, the odd small drink! The snorkelling was absolutely amazing on the second day, as we stumbled across a massive school of rainbow fish and larger grey fish who were feeding in a circle around us. Awesome!! We also saw three massive iguanas, who at over three foot in length, looked genuinely pre historic! A number of the Thai workers came with us, and the owner, Nob, spent the entire day out harpooning on a long boat he built himself, then cooked for us all, then stayed up all night drinking and was still more awake than the rest of us, absolutely amazing!
Having returned to Last Beach, I am filling my days with lying in the bar on the beach front, reading a book, or playing in the sea. They have the two famous lies of Last Beach here..... 1: I'm not drinking tonight and 2: I'm leaving tomorrow...... with the atmosphere akin to The Beach, I completely agree with both!!
