After an amazing 4 days in Chiangmai we are on yet another form of transport, a 6 hour mini bus ride followed by a two day boat to Laos! Chiangmai was amazing and we were sad to leave, the hostel cost a mere 2 pounds a night and was fab...really sociable with lots of space to chill hippy style under the stars. The toilet was the only downfall with no flush, you had to fill it with buckets of water to sort it! On arrival we met a Canadian girl called lauren who worried about travelling alone joined us, we then met our roomies at 'a little bird guesthouse' Elisa and Gina who were also from Canada, together we went for lunch and spent the afternoon touring temples and learning about buddhists-they are not allowed to wear underwear!! We ended the day with some yum noodle soup with pork balls.
The following day we went on an amazing tour- 8am to 6pm full of elephant riding, waterfalls, bamboo rafting, white water rafting and a visit to a hill tribe village. Highlights were the elephants although slightly scary once on them, we were clinging on very tightly as they navigated a steep climb! Haha....I also managed to fall out of the raft in the "dryeat, calmest time of year" to go on the river! I was hoisted out by the scruff of my lifejacket and dropped back into the boat head first luckily with only a bruised tailbone! On the trip we added another two canadians -Danielle and Bryan- to the group and along with some Americans we found at the hostel we went to a mexican restaurant and then for cocktails at a roof top bar :).
We took the remaining two days quite slowly lounging around in the mornings, one afternoon we went to tiger kingdom where we got to play with baby tigers...I chickened out of playing with the big ones which would have made for more impressive photos! At the same time the more animals we see the less sure I am that Caging them is beneficial? And the last day we paid to use a posh hotels pool and got started on our tans. We also stumbled across a bustling night Market which sold the CHEAPEST sushi and 3 of us bought the coolest playsuit although the search for traveller jasmin-style trousers continues!
All in all a fantastic place and would have loved to stay longer. The 7 of us (Lauren after being left at the hostel missed us and is going to rejoin us) are all heading east excited for the famous 'tubing' that Laos has to offer!
*Tan-thumbs up
