I'm leaving on a jet plane...dont know when I'll be back again...
The day has come. The day I leave South East Asia and head home to the land of soft carpets, cheddar cheese and most importantly mashed potato!!
We've had two days in Bangkok before flying and we braved Khoasan road. When we first started our travels we picked a hostel through STA in the UK not knowing where backpacker areas were so this time we made the most of it and stayed on a quiet road off Khoasan. It's a really cool area full of shops, bars and really cheap street food.
We arrived after a long night bus where we got about 4 hours sleep but luckily our hostel had a nap area and at 8am we were shown to our dorm. After a quick snooze we hit the shops- hard! I'd compiled a list of things I wanted to buy, some for myself and the rest souvenirs. The first day we wandered Khoasan and got some bargains. I then asked a stall holder where I could find a tailor and he hailed a tuk tuk and told us he would take us to a great one for 20 Baht! It turns out it's the biggest in Bangkok and features in a book under the best 10 tailors in the world...so I got a suit made! A lovely grey one for when I decide to enter the real world- the world of work! They took my measurements and then later I went back for a fitting and the following day it was sent to the hostel- all for £80 ( trousers, jacket and skirt)- not too shabby eh!
In the evening we went to a skybar dressed in our classiest travelling clothes. It was amazing and we drank cocktails whilst gazing down at the river and the twinkling skyline. It was a celebration of Nut and I not having strangled each other during our journey!
The following day was much the same theme.. A mad dash for last minute gifts. First at MBK- a huuuuge shopping centre by bus that only cost 7 and second in Chinatown where I ran to reach a shop selling Cath Kidston just before closing time. I managed to grab a lovely handbag for a fiver- score!
So that brings me to last night where we went for a final curry choosing our favourites, a green one for me and masaman for Natalia finished off with a Chang. We had bought Chang tshirts so we needed a Chang beer to go with it- the beer was more expensive than the t-shirt haha!
And now...I'm currently between flights at Mumbai airport, I set off from the hostel at 5 am and should arrive chez Dave at 11pm for a lovely 3 day weekend with him and then time with the rents after that. Again Kingfisher airlines are amazing me- I've had a 3 course breakfast so far and it was delicious!
Im sad to leave as I've had such a good time, I've met some lovely people as well as some interesting characters and seen a lot of amazingly weird and wonderful things! It feels like I've been in a bubble of backpackers all slowly moving on mass round the tourist track. It's true that it's hard to get away from tourists but I havn't minded it and travelling in groups has made it even more fun! I've loved tuk tuks, bartering, street food and sitting cross legged on cushions for meals and much more that I'm not going to list! And all the scary moments have just added to the experience and given me the feeling that I can face anything!
I doubt I'll be back Thailand way anytime soon but I'm thinking Japan in a few years would be great!
Ps. I was going to title this ' the day the mozzys cried!'... No more juicy flesh for them to sink their teeth into...how sad they will be!
They did leave me with a nice reminder though - a whopper right on the tip of my elbow!
