Day 2: Last night was crazy! People congregating at the doors of their rooms in the middle of the night to see the thunder storm! You could feel the thunder, the lightening lit up the entire sky! It was incredible! Everything is way cooler on the other side of the world! Defs worth losing a few hours of sleep over!
Today we discovered Rotorua and I'm glad we decided to venture around today as the weather was b-e-a-uitful! Hoodie off, glasses on :-) It was sweet as! Little morning stroll to Lake Rotorua, followed by exploring the Ohinemitu Marae, which was incredible. The little community surrounded by hot springs, steam coming through the drain and from in-between the stones- amazing! The ground was even super hot to touch! Moving on to the Rotorua museum which actually took us for a good 3 hours! Having a private tour was way helpful- did you know that the Rotorua museum used to be a rich mans bath house and all the baths were made in Stoke-On-Trent and all the tiles similar! Yes, Carlin! Stoke is totally famous for it's pottery and such, we should have gone to all the brown tourist signs! :-) haha! There was also a Maori section of the museum which fascinates me the most, I'm learning heaps about the culture. However, this far through the day I wasn't too know but my whole day was spent exploring the Maori. With an afternoon at Te Puia! Watching a welcoming show of dancing and singing that is still performed with the Maori community. I was more intrigued though by the things they do with their flax! Weaving school here I come!
It was getting into late afternoon, close to dinner so a little drive from Rotorua to Tauranga, getting here has consisted of proper fish and chips from a fish market, some tree hugging, a discussion about god, being duck taped around the mouth and watching a young man wax his legs with duck tape! So, myth buster- on tv you see people struggling to speak and get the duck tape off! It's fake! I was able to talk and I licked the duck tape off! Duck tape failure! It's been a big day and a sleep is truly deserved I think. Peace out xo
