I walked to San Jose again yesterday with two other students. It was so much better than last time! It seemed like a completely different city. Even the walk was better. The street was lined with individual street vendors selling all sorts of things from handmade jewelry to weird children's toys. We also found a bunch of huge open air markets selling really cheap and incredibly fresh produce. They have a ton of fruits here that I've never heard of in my life. For example, I had some guanabana yesterday. It's a huge green melon with white fruit and black seeds. There were also open markets that sold tons of handmade crafts. Costa Rica is really well known for goods made from all sorts of wood. I bought two pairs of earrings yesterday for $2 each, one made from coconut wood and the other from rosewood. They're beautiful! We also saw some street dancers and there were people playing music all over the place. My friend Greg even got a shoe shine for less than $2.
I like this place more and more everyday. At first I thought it was boring but now I'm starting to realize that is probably because I'm not really on vacation this time. I'm in an area where people live ordinary lives but have incredible places to go on the weekend. City life is bland during the week but that's ok because people work. Then on the weekend all you have to do is catch a $4 bus for a couple hours and boom you're at the beach. It doesn't have a lot of rich cultural history like Mexico but it makes up for it with it's flor and fauna. The people here are in general very happy and I can definitely see why.
Well, today is my first day of class! Wish me luck!
P.S. If you have the chance, you should download the program called "Skype". It will allow us to talk for free! It's like talking on the phone but through the computer. It is really expensive to call from here so it would be way easier if I could just talk to everyone that way. All you need is a microphone and the program.
