Today I went to see the Irazu Volcano with three of the other TEFL students. My neighbor Alfonso, who is also the principal taxi guy for the school, took us and gave us a full tour. The Volcano was beautiful! Also, we were extremely lucky to be able to see the lagoon because the crater is almost always covered by dense clouds. Alfonso told us that this was only the second time he has been able to see it and he has lived here his whole life.
We also stopped and toured an onion farm and learned how they harvest that particular crop. The farmers thought it was pretty funny that we were talking pictures of their onions.
On the way back to San Pedro, we stopped in Cartago which is the home of the famous Basilica de la Virgen de los Angeles. On August 2nd, the day of the Virgen de los Angeles, people arrive on foot from all over the country to give thanks. Some even make the journey on foot from the Nicaraguan border and have to begin weeks in advance.
When we got back to San Pedro, I went to eat at a soda with the other students. This is a little food stand that sells authentic Costa Rican cuisine for cheap. The food here is unfortunately pretty bland and boring. I eat rice and beans for breakfast and lunch. The only thing that I think is really good is their salads, which they make with cilantro and lime juice.
Costa Rica is pretty good but I definitely am happy that I will be going to Mexico when the program is over. This country definitely lacks the intriguing history that makes Mexico so great.
Hope all is well back in the states! I miss you guys!
