Today we got up early and headed by Tube to the Tower of London. We managed to join a Yeoman Warder tour before it got extremely busy. Our Beefeater was Mark. He was very entertaining and many gory stories were told. He seemed to want the scare the kids in the crowd by bringing up stories of children with similar ages. We visited the chapel where many of the bodies of the executed nobles were laid to rest after being found underneath the church - including Lady Jane Grey and Queen Anne Boleyn.
We viewed the Crown Jewels including the one piece of the Cullinan diamond that was not on display at Buck House. We were lucky to see so much at the Palace really. We went onto walk around the East Wall and into the many tower where some of the prisoners were kept. We finished up in the White Tower to view the armouries. I was impressed. All exhibits here were presented very well. It was a bit over run with school children but that was to be expected.
We headed over to Pret A Manger for lunch. We took the RV1 bus from Tower Bridge over to the London Eye - near Westminster Bridge near Southbank. Since the weather was sunny (surprise, surprise!) the crowds were growing. We decided to splurge and took the fast track tickets. We were one the wheel within 5 minutes. Each capsule has a capacity for 25 people and takes 30 minutes to make one rotation. We had a fantastic 360• view! We could even see the Olympic stadium on the distance. We got some fantastic shots.
We came back down to land and flaked out on the grass with a cup of tea. Esme played on a large wooden play structure of giant sized logs.
We took the RV1 bus back to Tower Bridge and walked over to Mum and Dad's hotel (Guoman Tower Hotel) right beside the Bridge. We spent sometime in their room before cabbing it over to a pub in Wapping (The Prospect of Whitby) where my parents first met 50 years ago. We had a good dinner there overlooking the Thames. According to my parents the place hasn't really changed in 50 years. It had opened during Henry VIII reign. Amazing!
We took a taxi bak to the Guoman Towers, said goodnight and jumped on the District Line back to Earl's Court.
