In my last blog I finished by mentioning how I was very close to "making the sureal journey home", that was before I heard about Hurricane Irene. It was due to travel over New York City on the day of my flight, so of course, all flights on Sunday 28th were cancelled and I had to endure the stress of "when will I get home?!". Lucky for me, I say lucky, I was able to get a flight on 4th September, as flights were going fast and I needed a seat that was to the same standard as my original ticket. So now I have a whole extra week in New York, it could be worse though as New York is one of the world's greatest cities. But I was very much looking forward to seeing Wicked the Saturday before I was supposed to leave and that too, got cancelled. All broadway shows were cancelled for the Hurricane Irene weekend. It is certainly a story to add to my many others I have endured on my travels.
Since my last blog I have seen the Statue of Liberty, which is much smaller than you may imagine. The smallest window in a her crown is the same size as a grown man's hand. Just to give you an idea of the size of the lovely lady. Some were worried that Hurricane Irene would pull down the beloved statue, but that girl is made of sturdy stuff and as the Hurricane made landfall, it has gradually been demoted to just a tropical storm from it's original category 3 status.
On the 26th I went to dinner round the family of a friend that I met in New Zealand, and this is where I first caught wind of the windy storm! I thought very little of it at first as I hadn't heard of it prior to this. Obviously it proved to be more of a threat to New York City as they haven't had a major Hurricane in 100 years and the city is not built for such natural disasters. In the end it turned out to be just a lot of flooding, and most forms of transport are nearly back in full motion again. Because I was very central North-West of the city, it was just fairly windy and the occassional heavy shower. Not much of a threat in my opinion.
But every storm cloud has a silver lining as I have re-booked tickets to go see Wicked on the coming Wednesday matinee, and my new ticket was cheaper and about 5 rows futher foward in the orchestra seating and more central too. I was also approached by a street promoter for a comedy club, he told me Russel Howard (amazing British comedian - Mock the Week) was playing in their club all week. I managed to get a ticket down from $20 to $5, as he also told me it would be $40 on the door. As I felt it was too good to be true I asked over and over "and you are SURE Russel Howard is playing this week?" I was answered with "Would I lie to you?" and the answer to that is "Yes, he did" I checked the clubs website when I returned and not a single well-known name was performing this week so I went to the club to claim a refund, and when they asked me how much I paid, I said how "It was $40 on the door but he would sell it to me for $20" and so I made a profit of $15. Teaches them to hire people who lie to sell tickets.
For now I have just been relaxing in Central Park and exploring the city by foot, one of the best ways in my opinion! I shall keep you updated for my last, last week in New York *touch wood*
