woohoo im in Mongolia got to Ulan Battaar yesterday as you all know this has been one of my ambitions in life is to get to Mongolia ,,the country side here is fantastic and so are the people ,,lots of rubbish and decaying buildings but then lots of modern stuff happening in ub so its a real contrast
Its been 3 days since i last blogged 3 days of riding to get here [3 days at the office] one night at ulan ude in russia 5 hours to get over the border between russia and mongolia so many official papers and forms and hardly any computers makes you think what happens to all the papers and forms. At the russian border was our 1st experience of Mongolian drivers all jockeying for position at the 1 border gate on a bike its ok but if you were a foreigher in a car i reckon you would never get through.
Next night was at Darkhan 100k into Mongolia got bitten by mossies here, then the exciting bit as we got close to u.b. we could see the clouds of dust rolling down the hills towaed us ,,it was the end of the Nardaam [horse festival] horse races and all the locals were racing each other down the hills in their 4wds to get home .They drive like they are still on their horses ,,,they all converged on our road turning 2 lanes into 5 with a calophony of horns and shouting at each other ,,had a few moments but we stood our ground and went with the flow into the city.Back home this would have been a huge traffic jam but not here it worked the cops let it happen and there was chaos but no stop start was an experience.Found a nice hotel by following a cabbie again and orientated ourselves by walking around last night lots of english speaking food places here which is a change from Russia a lot more tourists here.
The countryside we have ridden through here is so nice a real contrast to Russia rolling green plains and hills Mongolian Gurts dotted everywhere sheep goats horses and roaming free across the roads sometimes minded by a Mongolian Herder ,,i love it , and a really earthy smell everywhere unlike Russia there is not many trees here so they collect the cow dung to burn in their fires
We watched the Nadarm stuff on live t.v. its a big deal here wrestling archery and horse racing the horse race is 35km long and thousands of horses are in it ,,all tough little horses just like the 'man from snowy river'
will be here about 3 or 4 days before we head west got some work on the bikes and the old blokes need some r and r ,,,miss you all but i am at one of my dream locations in life we all need our goals in life and arriving here by motorbike is very fulfilling talk soon
