hi sorry its been a while but much to tell you have just had 3 days on olkhon island in south west side lake baikal was a bit of a trip to get here about 1000k up and then a 1000k back to Ulan Ude was it was one of the most special places i have been ,,,a bit south is of new zealand but bigger more dramatic with a typical russian hard edge to it..Its totally unspoilt at this stage [apart from the rubbish] no hotels just small fishing villages that rent out rooms ,,we camped 1 night i what has to be the best camp sight i have ever had,,howabout that john murray,,,crystal clear water only about 6 hrs of night warm days cool nights,,,,,had my naked dip in baikal but its about 8 degrees its in and out and shrinkage...
in irkust now which is the capital of west siberia [i think] they have a lovely german beer house here with an english menu,,,its hard on the road cos nothing is in english but we do ok just a bit sick of borsch and blinny [pancakes with condensed milk]. a big hello to max from tinda max road with us all the way to baikal but missed the best bit by not going as far as olkhon,,,max made it so easy finding and booking into hotels speaking russian
Have done about 10000ks now need to change the oil in mongolia new back tyre all that sort of stuff and my chinese headlights have died guess they dont like the s***ty roads,,,,,,we are 3 days from mongolia another 1000ks we chatted with our ozzie freinds in their landcruisers and we hope to catch them in Ulan Bataar and maybe travel with them thru mongolia [a cold beer each night as they have a fridge]
dropped my bike 3 times the other day riding the soft sand on olkhin island it was a bit like riding on the soft sand of nth beach we piked it and went in a tourist jeep which was great russian commentary but we had fun with all the locals
have been on the road for nearly 5 weeks im settling in to my days at the office pack the bike ride 400 to 500ks lots of food and coffee breaks and socialising at night ,,,we have met many many russiand who are so freindly and helpful they are lovely people and so far we havent had any theft or safety issues at all although you never leave the bikes unattended and most hotels have lock ups
next time you will hear from me i will be in mongolia [something that i have wanted to do since i was a kid] all my love and thoughts to everyone back home i miss you all heaps esp my family my mum and mostly lizzy i cant get big pond working over here so this is my communication medium apart from my phone that works everwhere [libby i have made a few calls back home wait till you get the bill] one last thing the the local native population on olkhin is are called burats and they look at lot like our murat so there could be an ancient connection there bye for now love to all
