Day 3 - 2 Days in Newman. One surely has to think of Seinfeld and the character Newman. Kramers best friend and Jerrys nemesis. When arriving into Newman one does get that feeling of 'hello Newman?!' but after a look around it is not quite that at all. It is suprisingly a lovely place although the size of the place is like him. Large trucks, largest single iron ore cutting (in the world), biggest amount of dongas and the highest elevation (1055m above sea level). Newman is actually quite civilised although the red dirt does no favours for the complexion! The town has a definite purpose and has the infrastructure to fulfill every persons needs - Rockmans, Chicken treat, Mitre 10, Woolies and GREAT coffee! Yes, I would not kid, it was very good coffee! There are also lots of walking tracks that will take you through the greenery of the bush and the red of the dirt. Kate, you could even survive here, yes it has a gym. Oh, take a tip- don't wear white in the Pilbara. White doesn't stay that way for long and nor do the puppies
Our caravan park experience was one to learn from. We put a tick in every box when it came to what not to do! We arrived late that night - as you know from the last entry, dodging the stray bulls on the way up. We had to pick a site in the dark! Not only was the site on a mound that made levelling the caravan almost impossible, it was in a major bunch of bindi-i's and red dirt, not the acres of grass that surrounded us! We didn't even think to pick a tree to place the van under to protect us from the blazing sun we had to sit under for the 2 days
As you can imagine the drive is fairly monotonous, beautiful but monotonous! Apart from the wedge tail eagles feasting on the rotting carcasses of the recent road kills and the dingos skulking back to the bush, there isn't a lot to keep you occupied. We invented a game of greetings from the wheel. We had to guess how or if the oncoming driver would guesture. That was fun for a minute until the oncoming traffic obviously heard wind of our game and decided not to play! Today, listening to talk back ABC radio our best friend Todd (the father of my god child)came on the radio. Sounding like he knew what he was talking about he gave a very impresive account of the stock market and then a review of the horror movie Saw IV. See, we are never far away really?!
Note to a couple of people, Thank you to the AZ guys, in particular Sharon for the Tinea thongs. A much needed addition to the wardrobe. Liz, my salt/pepper shaker has pride of place in the van.
Arrived in Tom Price today> We had to put the girls into the kennels. Not the accommodation that they are use to- wire cages, cement floors and lots of noisy dogs. I can only imagine the state of them when we pick them up on Tuesday. Apart from being completely off us they will be covered in prickles and red dirt - look forward to that!
Favourite things today - Dingo on the road, Sunset at Tom Price, Change in landscape and the coffee at Newman
