Last day in Barcelona and last day in Spain. I had until 3pm to fill the day before catching the airbus to the airport.
First up, to complete my basic tour of Gaudi I went to the park. Not just any park but the one he designed (about a mile from the nearest metro stop too). Pretty amazing and has the modaic tiled lizard you see everywhere in Spain. I like how Gaudi's designs fit in with nature, the curves blending into the area. The almost haphazard design (which is not actually haphazard at all). Even the bright coloured pieces appear more organic than most buildings. They are fluid and I think they are beautiful.
I also decided to try my luck at the sagrada familia and the never ending ticket line. It was a zoo. So instead, I went to the zoo (after walking around sagrada familia and admiring it from all four sides).
The zoo is found in a park just beyond the Arc Triomphe (different from the French version). On the way I stopped at a rather spectacular multitiered fountain and a statue of a mammoth. Without properly translating the sign or enlisting the help of google I assume that once upon a time they found a mammoth (well the remains thereof) there.
Compared to Auckland Zoo, Barcelona Zoo was a bit rundown and some enclosures needed work. However, the range of animals was amazing. Lion and tigers and bears, oh my! Dolphins and seals. Otters. Zebra, giraffe, elephants, monkeys. A huge male orangatan ( seriously giant). Gorillas. The list goes on.
A good way to end. Not 'spanish' so to speak but it meant I left Spain on a good note, rather than memories of some other tourist's back after staring at it whilst in a queue for two hours. Adios Spain! Bonjour Paris!
