First day in Madrid ended up being a bit of a bust. I had planned a trip to Segovia with the hostel yesterday as they run a shuttle bus to and from their on occassion. Half an hour before the allotted meeting time I was informed it had been cancelled. So I had to make new plans and now figure out how I was going to get to Segovia in the next few days. I firstly tried to find an official tour company. Found one. Tried to book. It didnt like my card (actually Spain in general doesnt like my card-this being the same card that has worked in Greece, Turkey, Bosnia, Portugal etc). Decided to figure out the trains instead (involves a metro and a high speed train, then a bus).
So a whole day to kill in Madrid. Madrid is one of those cities where it would be fantastic if you are travelling with someone as the many tapas bars means you can pull up a stool and share tidbits of food. Doesnt work so well on your own, especially if one tapa is enough to fill you up. Its also boring propping up a bar after a while.
So I wandered around and visited
Jardines del Campo del Moro, Catedral de la Almudena and Palacio Real. I had intended to go inside Palacio Real until I saw the non moving queue all the way down the street (complete with buskers and beggars approaching everyone in line). As an alternative I visited Templo del Debod, an egyptian temple fleeced by the Spaniards and rebuilt in Madrid.
So it was a day of considerable wandering, eating spanish omelette and looking in stores.
