After the seven hour overnight flight from from London to Muscat (Sunday into Monday) we had a quick dash through the airport to catch the onward flight to Kuala Lumpur (another six and a half hours) which saw us touch down at 8pm on Monday evening at KL International Airport. After a night at a hotel at the airport, where we met up with friends John & Rita who had arrived from Dubai, we headed into Kuala Lumpur on the KLIA Express - a thirty minute trip by train to KL Sentral station. Our hotel in the city for two nights was an easy walk from the station - most handy for Thursday morning as we will be catching an early train towards Singapore. Given the haze of smog hanging over the city (as a result of forest fires in Indonesia) we were given face masks to help combat the 'unhealthy' quality air. The previous day it had been classified as 'very unhealthy' . . . . . so, at least it was getting better! Our first day im KL saw us visit the Petronas Twin Towers, the KLCC shopping mall and the Shangri-La Hotel, where we stayed on our previous visit to the Malaysian capital ten or so years ago. Our visit up the Petronas Towers was at dusk so we did get to see the city lighting up during our time here, albeit the views were somewhat limited because of the haze. Our evening was rounded off by a great curry at Bombay Palace followed by a cheeky 'craft beer' at the Taps Beer Bar as Tuesday rapidly became Wednesday. Wednesday morning let us see some blue sky as we enjoyed breakfast at the hotel before heading out to visit the old main railway station, the central market and the colonial Merdeka Square. Well, we could not actually wander around the colonial square as it was closed off ahead of marches to celebrate Malaysia Day, however we could stand at one end of the square and look. After some respite from the heat in both Starbucks and the swanky five star Istana Hotel we headed back to our own hotel to meet up with the fifth member of our group, Chris, who had recently arrived from Penang. That pretty much wrapped up our time in KL as after an evening meal at The Outback Steakhouse we set the alarm for 5.15am so we can enjoy an early breakfast before catching the train at to Johor Baru. From where we will cross into Singapore on Thursday afternoon if all goes to plan, which I am sure it will.
