Having dropped hire car #1 off at Frankfurt Airport, and collected hire car #2 on the Friday morning it was time for our second week in Germany. This was to be an unplanned week - something we have never done before, so we would just be booking hotels as we travelled.
Heather had found a hotel in a town called Freyburg, it looked like a nice place, and the town seemed to be a good base for exploring the surrounding area, plus it was in Germany's northernmost wine growing area.
The drive across from Frankfurt, mostly in damp conditions, involved a lot of Autobahn driving and took over three hours. The roads are certainly busy in Germany, and there are plenty of lorries about, but when you get an unrestricted bit of road, and the weather is good, the speeds are very high for cars. Even when travelling at over 150kph there would always be a BMW, Mercedes or Audi that would catch and pass you as if standing still.
Freyburg looked like a lovely place for a three night stay, even if we did arrive in the pouring rain. That must have been a good sign!
The hotel, right on the main square, provided us with a big room, a good bathroom and the buffet breakfast, as we found out, was a pretty decent affair. We did have a walk around the town centre before having dinner at the hotel itself, so it was traditional Germanic food, beer and local wine in traditional settings for us. It was very good and rather filling.
The following morning the weather had cleared and we headed a short distance to the historic town of Naumberg. What a great little place this turned out to be. We parked at the railway station and used the Naumberg Straßenbahn to journey into the central area. This tramway, Germany's shortest, runs historic ex DDR trams over its 2.8km length and was great fun.
Naumberg was a nice place to spend a few hours wandering the historic central area, enjoying a coffee and a cake before visiting the stunning cathedral and having another trip on the Straßenbahn.
Our second full day, the Sunday, in Freyburg was spent in and around the town itself. Firstly we walked uphill to the Schloß Nueunburg that sits above the town. This was an interesting place to visit and provided great views over the surrounding vineyards.
After watching the F1 we walked to the Rotkäppchen Sekt production facility in Freyburg. Even though we understood very little of what was said on the tour, the end product tasted the same in any language!
Our final evening meal was had at a Greek restaurant. The portion sizes were large, the food was tasty, although service was a little abrupt.
