Bamberg was just a 45 minute journey by train from Nuremberg and a nice place to visit for the day. If you enjoy a beer then the town boasts at least eight breweries that you can visit between doing all of those other touristy things. I guess you could however not bother with the historic buildings and museums and just spend the day going from brewery to brewery - that does sound rather tempting! The town is home to two very large church and palace complexes, the Cathedral (dating from circa 1007) and New Residence (circa 1697) in the Domplatz area and the St Michael's (circa 1015) in the Michaelsburg area. Both are on top of hills overlooking the historic town centre, although what goes up must come down and back up again if you are walking between the two of them. A bit of exercise is however good for you and of course you may build up a thirst for a beer. The very photogenic Altes Rathaus (old town hall) dating from 1744, that now houses a porcelain museum, on the river is probably the centre of the old town area that is UNESCO heritage listed. The new town and more modern shopping covers the area along the 15 minute walk from the railway station via Maximillianplatz and the Grüner Markt. So, in summary, a good place for a touristy day trip, but not somewhere I will rush back to unless it is for a brewery pub crawl!
