After the Gorge we headed for Portland, Oregon a city we had wanted to visit but we were unable to find any camping within a reasonable distance. We drove into the city centre, visited the visitor information office who were unable to come up with anything either so we headed out again and set off for the west coast. We had to have an overnight stop on the way in a State Park which as ever was very peaceful and well maintained.
Cannon Beach is one of the most popular and upscare resorts on the Oregon coast catering for a somewhat more yuppy holiday maker than its neighbour Seaside 6 miles up the coast. We drove up to Seaside to do some shopping and it certainly catered to a different clientele, like comparing Blackpool with a gentile town in the Lake District yet only a few miles separted them. The beaches on the coast are miles and miles of white sand backed by huge rocks. We walked one way for several miles along the coastal patch enjoying the dramatic views down to the beaches and out to the massive rocks off shore the habitat of puffins and pelicans. The next day we cycled down the coast road in the opposite direction again enjoying the spectacular scenery and doing a 30 mile round trip, having lunch in anothr small town and watching a local wedding.
We spent a great 3 days here relaxing and chatting with our fellow campers, again the GB plate causing a good deal of interest and many questions, and generally taking things easy in this totally laid back small holiday town. The most taxing most people seem to do is stay on the beach all day then at night have a huge ice cream and stroll along the beach or sit around a beach campfire watching the sun set, just what holidays are meant for, it reminded me of holidays in Cornwall 40 years ago, without the beach campfire but a packet of crisps outside the Cornish Chuff in Newquay.
