Hood River is apparently one of the best windsurfing and kiting districts in the world. Strong currents, westerly winds and a vast expanse of water attracts hundreds to the area. On the afternoon we drove into town across the bridge that separates the state of Washington from Oregan there were many on the water both kiting and wind surfing which made for a very colourful spectacle. This small town is packed at the weekends and is a popular weekend retreat from Portland, Oregon with all accommodation booking up early. It was a great place to chilll out for a couple of days and watch the surfers, drink good coffee and read a newspaper (o.k. I made the newspaper bit up as US papers are not really interesting) what I wound't give for a good British paper!! The only problem in these parts is the railroad runs along both sides of the river and is still a busy route today, consequently most campsites are literally just steps from the line and as trains run all night long, with some very long goods trains, a good set of earplugs is necessary.
