Ok second attempt as the first writing of this disappeared...
2nd full day here and I pop into tescos- exit with a cheap pair of tongs (hindsight brings regret). I decide to follow a route that someone posted on wikitravel.
Get onto skytrain so I can get to a canal boat at Saphon Hua Chang. I jump on (literally leapt in), it doesn't stop for long. I get off to see Wat Ratchanaddaram. I'm walking along when a random man stats chatting. He advises the Wat I am going to is closed because of Buddhist prayers that run from sat - tues, he advises of the other Wats i should visit. On all the guides they warn of a scam where you are told what you want to see is closed and you should go on a tuk tuk tour of other attractions however after he jotted down the 'what's what of Wats' he didn't push for anything. As I was across the road from Ratchanaddaram i thought I'd go see...enter random man #2 - he gives similar advice as #1 by which point I'm outside the gates of my intended Wat......
It was open and not a prayer in sight. There were lots of little interactive info points and a large tower, of which gave amazing views of BK. To follow on the wikitravel route I was meant to get a cab to Wat Pho but the driver refuses and drive off. I wonder to the golden mount, bit of a climb but amazing views again and a nice breeze. The vegetation on the sides were impressive. I then wander down the road and take my first tuk tuk.
Haggle, haggle, haggle - hop in. Get dropped at Wat Pho. I see the lazy ( I mean) reclining buddha. Heavens spat at cats n dogs so that was a lot of sheltering going on. From here i take the back exit to Tha Tien to get the river boat. The wiki entry advised it was next to a Market, I go through the Market - now there's a lot of dried fish knocking about but the catfoodish smell made my inner 'i'll try anythingness' subside. Get to river pier, wait a while. Eventually get boat to the marine department, now this part of the trip isn't on the wiki route as i needed to get a train ticket for chiang mai.
So I end up navigating through a labyrinth of small streets all of which have shops selling vehicle parts, each one with a dedicated worker bashing at bigger parts of machinery to dismantle into little parts. Amazing how high the parts were stacked and with little walk ways cut through the mounds of metal. At this point my tongs were rubbing at my feet more violently than a dyslexic shoolchilds exam sheet. I eventually get to the train station.......
