Got up early, a little groggy but not as bad as predicted. Needed to get cash to pay for the guesthouse. Went to ATM - nope, not having any of it. Had no phone credit, luckily the man in the shop topped it up for me, rang the bank - Oh yeah it has been blocked - i had spoke to them a week before and said how long i was travelling for. At this point the bus was due in about 20 minutes so it was pretty frantic start to the day. In the end it was all fine and had to time for a coffee, farewells to the lovely guesthouse family and some photos with them too (he took a photo for his wall of fame - Get In!).
On the minibus i spotted a nice little protected alcove under a seat that i could prop my foot under, but stupidly this was the furthest seat at the back in the corner and over the wheel. We stopped just outside of CHiang Rai at the White Temple. The whole place is set up just as a tourist trap to pull in the buses, mini vans and earn some farang money. It was an impressive structure which they were still making (tucked away in a shed in the corner there was a guy painting more white pointy architecture). I was rather confused as right next to the entrance, half submerged on the ground was a very realistic sculpture of non-other than Predator, as in the sci-fi, Arny hating Predator. I really couldnt fathom the reasoning or connection between a sci-fi character that has entertained many hours of western boys' converstions starting "who would win in a fight between Predator or Alien?."
Anyways... we got back on the road. I did really want to sleep as i was feeling thegrind frm the night before but as soon as my eyes closed with my head against the window - Donk! - i would be rudely awoken by a amorphous (non-crystalline) solid material.
Eventually landed in Chiang Khong around 7pm-8ish. Part of the package included a night at this guesthouse - which was nice little woodedn huts set around a garden.
I had the free evening meal and a beer. There were two French girls sat outside their hut who asked if i would like to join. Am i some sort of magnet to the French?. They were sisters treveling in they're Uni holidays. They asked, just like one from the French group did in Chiang Mai "what was the English opinion of the French?". I treid to explain the "Daily Sport' type of persons mentality of the French and that that this was a small few etc etc. When i reversed the question they said it was the same with the French. Headed to bed fairly early as we were leaving around 8 ish to cross the border into Laos.
