Today was a very full day. We started it off at La Sagrada Familia. Construction started in 1882 and will be completed in about 2030. On average there is an annual budget of €18 million a year. When completed it will have 18 steeples, three main facades (the passion, nativity, and glory), and will hold 10 thousand people; along with 1200 choir members. It will be the largest church in the world.
It was designed by Gaudi and at first is almost a ugly sight to behold. I thought it much to contemporary for my taste but once inside and hearing about all the details and symbolism that has been incorporated, I have bagun to really like it. It is truly a work of genius. Once inside you somewhat feel like large trees grow all around you, since that is the way he had designed the pillars. It was a little hard to get a reaally feel for the church since there was construction everywhere, even inside the main nave. Things are really busy right now since the pope will be consecrating the church in a four days. As much awesome as it would have been to see the ppope visit, we are glad to have missed a large crowds and got to truly see Barcelona.
After we walked down the street that holds much of Gaudi's architect. We stopped to visit his Casa Mila building, which wad designed as an apartment building. There is almost no straight lines, it almost looks like it is growing out of the ground. The terrace has lots of little pillars like look like knights almost. Some say that it must of been the inspiration for Darth Vader. We all enjoyed it.
The rest of the day was spent shopping, much to Dad's dismay. Though Mom and I found some great buys, including shoes! Though by the end we were all exhausted and headed off to find supper. The restaurant we stopped in as fantastic and we all enjoyed ourselves. It was a very exhausting day but, a very a very good day.
