Goughie and Gater: le tour!!
We have now returned from our 3 day trip to the salt flats in the South of Bolivia and have crossed the border into the North of Chile, where finally we are warm!! The salt flats were really impressive and the view from Catus Island was fantastic. Unfortunately sarah left her USB cable in La Paz so the photos won't be up for a few days. On arriving into Uyuni to start the tour our rubbish tour company told us that the only way we would be able to go on the tour would be if we split up and went in separate groups. So we both headed off in different directions.
Sarah's group was cool - an Irish couple, two Dutch secondary school teachers (who it turned out hated students and kicked off big style when they found out they would have to share a dorm with 5 20somethings) and two German lads who were hilarious and actually kind of fit to Sarah's delight! Both nights were spent consuming wine to combat the freezing temperatures although the drunken atmosphere did start up a debate about WWII, not great!!
Claire was not so lucky with her group - she was with a couple of friendly Israeli girls and an Italian family who seemed to complain about the food a lot.
After the tour of the salt flats, the second and third day were spent visiting the coloured lakes and driving through the desert. We saw some Geysers (which both of us thought were animals before the trips, why we were very confused as to how they made electricity from them) on the active volcano and Sarah got to see the pink flamingos she has been talking about for the last 2 months!
We both successfully crossed the border into Chile (after a very close inspection of Sarah's english teabags, our presents to send home to the UK and peanut butter!) and met up with Peter and Dave who had arrived a day ahead of us. We went sandboarding in the Valley of Death (see a pattern???) which was wicked fun and this afternoon we are heading back out there, but on horseback.
Salta in Argentina is our next stop tomorrow xx
