Goughie and Gater: le tour!!
Well we are offically survivors of the worlds most dangerous road...there are 75 deaths per 10km per year and we mountain biked down all 66km of it. Sheer cliffs and all. Even the road into Bagdad is less dangerous with less likelihood of death. The picture on this postcard is of us on sunday so you can see how near to the edge we were!!
We started off on the tarmac for 22km (but there were still sheer drops) at an altitude of 4800m (thats v high for anyone who doesnt know) and then some of us (ie sarah) got in the van for the 6km uphill stretch before starting the infamous road down to Coroico in the jungle. The ground was really rocky and there was lots of gravel at the top but because downhill cyclists have to stay on the left hand side of the road we were scarily close to 1km sheer drops a lot of the time. As you can see from the pics we got absolutely covered in mud as we went further down the road, our faces were absolutely caked!
On the way down we spotted crosses that had been placed at the side of the road for the people who had gone over the edge and we saw the mangled wrecks of both a bus and a lorry that hadnt survived the journey. At the bottom we had to cycle through a couple of river crossings which was fun although our boots are absolutely ruined now!
However, the downhill bike ride was nothing compared to the fear we faced when we had to drive back up death road to get back to La Paz...the track is so narrow that there is no room for 2 vehicles so some scary downhill reversing right on the edge of the cliff was carried out by our minibus driver. Oh yes and he actually made the journey up even worse by playing inappropriate songs like "When will i see you in heaven". Not funny!
We have now finished our volunteering at the Red Cross...we spent a couple of really rewarding days in a community which had been wiped out by some floods a few months ago and help was just reaching them now. It really puts life into perspective when you can see poverty like that.
Anyway, off to the south of bolivia tomorrow, next instalment coming soon!!
