We have arrived in Amritsar which I've always thought sounded lovely but all the guide books say get in, see the temple and leave again. However first impressions are wide leafy streets, less poverty and it's peaceful.
Yesterday afternoon we went to the red fort on Delhi, not to be confused with the red fort in Agra or the Amber fort in Jaiper, we are only just getting them straight. Anyway it was another huge site, very interesting, but extremely run down compared to the other forts. However having travelled all morning it was nice to walk round the gardens and see the monuments.
Joe lost the curry challenge last night and had a Chinese, but Paul and I are happy to carry on for the moment.
The train ride was a real mixture of civilizations. We had air-conditioned seats and were bought tea and food constantly. We couldn't actually eat the food, as it was really odd, except Paul who will eat anything. He appeared to have cold chips and peas. Mine was veggy and was a savoury doughnut with some curdled milk thing to dip it in.
Anyway the train ran on time and newspapers were delivered free. we saw paddy fields and snatches of rural life along the way. Wont mention the toilet.
We went to the golden temple It's so beautiful and quite humbling seeing the Sihks who have come from all over the world, obviously moved by the experience. We were in a state of being grateful to be alive too after a hairy rickshaw race down a dualcarriageway and then thru narrow bazaars. We also had to walk up a steep hill as the drivers were too old and frail to make it.
When we got back I managed to delete all today's pictures from the camera, which is a real shame, but have a few for the blog on my phone. Enjoy.
