George's World Travels
Well Im here!
Theres no photos of Mogolia to chose from here so opted for this, Buddhist Monastry, as Buddhism is practiced by about 95% of people here.
Had an awful time both at Moscow airprt and on the flight! Although at checkin my skates were said to be no problem, evidently when going through security to get to my gate they were! Thus followed an awful hour of panic as I was told to go and wait in the lounge with everyone else, until a 'rtepresentative' arrived. They held onto my skates. They being horrid, rude and power hungry female Russian airport staff. Everytime I approached my skates and tried to find out when this mysterious 'representative' would appear (as time to boarding my flight grew ever closer) I was dismissed with a wave.
Finally, once half of the plane was already full someone arrived and after a bit or indecision let me go on with my skates afterall. Hour of hell for nothing.
The flight was pretty grim. Overnight. Got no sleep. Arrived 1am my body clock time. Yuck.
I was taken straight to my host family (after I must add 10 minutes of sheer panic as there was no one at the airport to pick me up! Luckily he was only running late) Im staying on the top floor of a very run down apartment block. Bit scary. The aprtment itself is quite homely. My rooms ok, but dont have any proper stoprage space. The family seem nice. The mother/wife can speak the most English, enough to get by I think. The son (1 year old) is quite sweet but a tad bratish. I think they let him get/have anything he wants (otherwise ensues serious tantrum, that I have had the plessure to witness)
After trying to get a few hrs sleep someone from T&P abroad took me around the city showing me all the places Ill need to remember, and how to get there. Am coping ok with all that, have gained a reasonable sense of direction over the last day, miracuously (as Myles will vouch for!)
Tomorrow im doing more of the same. Trying to see all places I need to see etc. In the evening going out with Oko (counrty coordinator) and other volunteers. Am really looking forward to meeting them, as have already felt quite lonely and isolated. (not helped by the fact that my mobile has taken a serious disliking to Mongolia and refuses to txt or call anyone. However, it can recieve texts, so please send them!)
Im gonna go back to th aparment now, have some dinner hopefully!
